The sorting on the expiration date does work. However, the page by default is loaded with the list grouped by Machine Name. So, if you sort by expiration date with that grouping applied, it will sort by date within each grouping. If you just want to see all checkouts sorted by expiration date together, then you can remove the grouping at the top of the table and then do the sorting.
